The participation of the Municipality of Pilea-Hortiatis in the campaign promoting historical memory tourism, and its inclusion as the first member of the Greek network in the Liberation Route Europe Foundation, highlights the turbulent history of the 20th century through the creation of specialized promotional material and the design of thematic routes.
The monuments and the Asvestohori Sanatorium, the British Military Cemetery of Exohi, and Mount Hortiatis—which served as a camping site for the Allied (Entente) forces during World War I and later as an escape network base and refuge for resistance groups during World War II—as well as the village of Hortiatis, which was declared a martyr village following the Holocaust of Chortiatis on 2 September 1944, are already presented on the LRE website, which records approximately 3 million views annually www.liberationroute.com and the website www.europeremembers.com which highlights real stories from World War II.
