The Municipality of Pilea-Hortiatis is located 18 km northeast of the urban Complex of Thessaloniki, in Northern Greece. It extends from Mount Hortiatis to the Thermaic Gulf and includes the settlements: Filyro, Pilea, Panorama, Exohi, Asvestohori and Hortiatis. In its eastern part lie "Mount Hortiatis", the "Seich Sou" and "Kouri" forests, and the "Filyro grove". The highest elevation is recorded at Mount Hortiatis (1,201 m), at the foothills of which the settlement of the same name is built.
The area has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. During the 20th century, it was a center for fighters of the Macedonian Struggle, a base for the English and French armies during World War I, a place of settlement for refugees, a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, the headquarters of the resistance forces and a place of sacrifice in World War II.
